PhotoDynamic Acne Treatment

This is a process whereby a photosensitizing agent called Levulan is applied to the skin and allowed to penetrate.

The Levulan is then activated with a specific wavelength of light. Following the procedure, active acne is reduced, and skin texture, tone, and color are improved. For maximum results, a series of three treatments may be necessary.

Levulan has been used extensively for the treatment of a variety of different skin conditions. The procedure can significantly improve moderate to severe acne.

How Does It Work?

Levulan, which is a clear painless solution, is applied to your skin and left on for 15-60 minutes. Levulan is absorbed by active cells like acne sebaceous glands, making the targeted acne cells more sensitive to the light. It is then activated with the correct wavelength of light. Treatments target and destroy acne activity, leaving your skin smoother.

Is There Any Post Treatment?

Avoid exposure of the areas treated with the Levulan to sunlight or bright indoor light for 24 hours following treatment. Exposure may result in a stinging and/or burning sensation and may cause swelling and redness of the acne lesions and the surrounding skin. Protect treated areas from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat or similar head covering of light-opaque material. Sunscreens will not protect against photosensitivity reactions caused by visible light. However, opaque sun-blocking agents such as zinc oxide will provide some protection within the first 24 hours. Generally, all reddening will be gone by four weeks after treatment and swelling is reduced or non-existent after one to two days.
